Pacific Dunes is an extraordinary links golf experience. It is currently the No. 2 public course in the Golf Digest 2015/2016 U.S. course rankings behind only Pebble Beach. It is the most photogenic of the five golf courses making up the Bandon Dunes Golf Resort. With its spectacular natural dunes and ocean frontage it appears to have been carved from the natural landscape as opposed to having been created with earth moving equipment like most golf courses in America. Architect Tom Doak of Renaissance Design with his associate Jim Urbina created an unusual routing of holes to adapt to the natural lay of the land. There is only one par 5 and one par 3 on the par 36 front nine. There are four par 3s and three par 5s on the par 35 back nine. The traditional front and back nine terms are irrelevant here. This course helped establish Tom Doak as one of the eminent course designers of our time. The course opened in 2001, two years after the first course, Bandon Dunes. The course is managed by KemperSports as are the other four courses and the rest of the resort.
